
GENERAL:
Provide
a complete Lightning Protection System as shown on the drawings
and as specified herein. This system shall be installed
by a firm actively engaged in the installation of Master
Labeled Lightning Protection Systems a minimum of five (5)
years shall be listed by Underwriters Laboratories, such
as Maxwell Lightning Protection Company, 621 Pond Street,
Dayton, OH 45402, (513) 228-7250, or 1-800-872-1657.
The
completed system shall comply with the latest edition of
the Installation Requirements for Master Labeled Lightning
Protection Systems U.L. 96A and the National Fire Protection
Association Lightning Code - N.F.P.A. 780, Lightning Protection
must be L.P.I. - certified and in good standing and so certified.
MATERIALS:
All materials used
in this installation shall be labeled or listed by Underwriters
Laboratories, Inc. for use in Master Labeled Lightning Protection
Systems. The catalog numbers referred to on the drawings
and herein are those of EAST COAST LIGHTNING PROTECTION,
MAXWELL LIGHTNING PROTECTION COMPANY or THOMPSON LIGHTNING
PROTECTION.
AIR
TERMINALS:
Air Terminals shall
project a minimum of ten (10) inches above the objects protected
and shall be located at intervals not exceeding 20' 0"
along ridges and around the perimeter of flat roof or gently
sloping roofs. Flat or gently sloping roofs exceeding 50'
0" in width shall be provided with additional air terminals
at intervals not exceeding 50' 0" on the flat or gently
sloping area. Air terminals shall be located within 24 inches
of the roof edge and outside corners of the protected area.
Air terminals
shall be provided for metal stacks, flues and mechanical
equipment having a metal thickness of less than 3/16"
and not within a zone of protection of an air terminal.
Equipment with metal thickness 3/16" or greater shall
be bonded per code requirements.
Air terminals
shall be, 3/8" X 12" (or longer as required) solid
copper using air terminal bases of cast bronze construction.
CONDUCTORS:
Main size conductors
on the roof shall be No. 29, Class I copper lightning conductor
consisting of 29 strands of 17 AWG copper wire weighing
190 lbs. per 1000 feet.
All secondary
bonding conductors shall be No. 14, secondary bonding conductor
consisting of 14 strands of 17 AWG copper wire.
All down
conductors shall be No. 29, Class I copper lightning conductor.
Down conductors shall be concealed in exterior wall construction.
Note:
Buildings over 60' require a conductor counterpoise cable
of 29/17 copper to meet N.F.P.A. code requirements for this
project.
ROOF
PENETRATIONS-FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION:
All roof penetrations
shall be made using a conduit sleeve passing through a pitch
pocket. The pitch pocket shall be installed by the roofing
contractor. The roofing contractor must include all additional
expenses for this additional work. Any roof pads or roof
stripping must be supplied and installed by the roofing
contractor, at the roofing contractors expense, to maintain
the roof warranty.
COMMON
GROUNDING & BONDING OF METAL BODIES:
Common grounding
of all ground mediums within the building shall be ensured
by connection to cold water piping or by direct bonding
using main size conductors and fittings.
Metal bodies
of conductance (metal bodies with a metal thickness of 3/16"
or greater and not located within the zone of protection
of an air terminal) shall be bonded using main size conductors
and fittings per code requirements.
Metal bodies
of inductance (metal bodies located within 6' 0" of
the lightning protection system) shall be bonded to the
system using secondary bonding conductors and fittings unless
inherently bonded through construction to another bonded
metal body.
GROUND
ELECTRODES:
Ground electrodes
shall be No. 5810, 5/8" X 10' long copper clad ground
rods located as shown on the drawings. Down conductors shall
be connected to the ground rods using exothermic weld connections.
STRUCTURAL
STEEL SYSTEM:
Structural steel
may be substituted for down conductors. Ground main steel
columns and average of 60' using Class II material. Roof
penetrations from steel to perimeter cables at 100', per
U.L. 96A, L.P.I. 175, and N.F.P.A. 780. Use exothermic weld
to all steel connections.
INSPECTION
AND ACCEPTANCE:
Upon completion
of the installation the contractor shall deliver to the
owner the Master Label issued by Underwriters Laboratories,
Inc. for this system. If the new addition connects to an
existing building that is not protected or brought up-to-date
a U.L. Letter of Findings must be obtained, at the lightning
protection contractors expense.
Note:
Surge Arresters at the main electrical panel are not included
under our scope of work. This must be installed and supplied
by the Electrical Contractor.
SUBMITTALS:
Drawings shall
be submitted for approval before delivering material and
beginning work. Drawings to show number of points, size
locations, conductor routes and size, grounding and details
of connectors. Catalog data for all items of material used
shall be submitted.
Lightning
protection contractor shall submit his Underwriters Laboratories
listing number, along with a copy of ten successful U.L.
inspection certificates and their identification numbers
installed in the last five years. Contractor must show proof
of insurance and must be substance to be bonded. |
